I grew up in a town with many people of Hungarian descent, but never had any savory Hungarian dishes (I do remember very tasty walnut pastries). Seven countries border Hungary; I think Hungary balances influences from neighboring countries very well. We ate paprikas csirke with homemade spatzle (first time with that!). 05/19/21
Suriname, like Guyana, has a fascinating culinary history, and a strong Indonesian culture. We love Indonesian food, and decided to exploit that by cooking bami goreng. So good! 05/14/21
Baked barley casserole. I'm working through the eastern European "sour belt" and this dish really exemplifies the culture's love of sharply flavored dishes. I love sour but I'm not digging what we've been eating in this region (although the Hungarian paprikash from last night was pretty terrific). This dinner had lots of vegetables but no garlic and only parsley, salt, and pepper for seasoning. Onward! 05/19/21
I heavily adapted this. The original recipe called for lamb, which no one in this house really likes. I used chicken instead and made a pilaf to go with the shaiyah. 05/12/21
